I've been away for quite a long while. I update my flickr photos (almost) regularly but forget my blog. I don't know if I have any readers but heck! - I'll do it for my own fun. :)
So, I've been busy with my entrance tests - I still have enough reading to do but time is running out. Not a good combination. I'm confident though; I'll manage to read the books twice and some bits even three times. And just to make things clear, I'm seeking to the university of Helsinki to study education and pedagogy.
Other than reading, I've been crafting lately. Mostly jewelry making and sewing. Here are some of the results:

Grandma's Apron

I stayed a week with my grandma in Lapland last month. She's a wonderful person; she turned 85 last January and she still lives home and takes care of herself. Anyways, I went through her craft closet and took some fabrics with me. She also gave me two old aprons she hadn't used in a long time. I already recycled a part of the other for a wallet:

It has two separed sides for cash and cards. The cash side also includes a coin pocket secured with Velcro. The wallet has a snap closure.

I also did my first fabric covered button and made it into a hairtie:

I was inspired by Momo's lovely creations.

I woke up this morning to sunshine that lighted my bedroom all over. What a great way to start the day! I was hopeful but all for nothing. Afternoon it started snowing and it went on for hours. Looks like no spring for Finland for some time. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Anyhow, I've been beading quite a lot lately. This anklet was inspired by the sunny weathers we had earlier:

I used 8/0 seed beads, 4 mm bicone crystals and 6 mm Czech fire polished beads.

This lariat-necklace is a birthday present for a friend of mine:

I used 1 mm chocolate brown cotton string, silver coated chain and an assortment of turquoisy beads.

This weeks Illustration Friday topic was sea. My illustration was inspired by a song "All at sea" by Jamie Cullum. I love it. It's calming and beautiful, one of my favorite songs.

I'm into beading!

Lately I've been into making beaded jewellery. I love to create unique pieces that no one else has, plus hand made jewellery is a great gift for anyone who enjoys crafty things.
Thought I'd post a few photos of pieces I've created:

Beads are from a bracelet I found at a discount rack. I often buy jewelry I wouldn't wear otherwise and recycle the beads.

A memory wire ring with beads crimped in place.

I gave this for my sister for Christmas. All of its beads are recycled from a inexpensive bracelet I found in Dublin.

Beading fairy has casted its spell on me! :)

IF - Holiday

It's been ages since I last took part in Illustration Friday. This week's topic gave me an instant idea which I was inspired to illustrate. Ever since I can remember, my favorite Christmas tradition has been baking the gingerbread cookies. I also like the part where you get to decorate them. I love to make individual "name cookies" for everyone in the house.
Look at what this little bear did! She even made a name cookie for me! :)

EDIT - Patty wanted to know how my art is done. I always mean to put it here but always forget. *blush* So, I always always hand sketch first because I don't have wacom tablet and mousie can be such a pain in the butt to work with. After sketching I usually ink (sometimes I want my illos to have a rough sketchy look and skip the inking part) and scan my doodle black and white and color with PS (C52).

Creativity boost

Last Sunday I finished this tote bag. It is made out of heavy brown cotton and cotton lining. The lining isn't really just white as it would seem to be, it has a cute clover leaf print (look at the detail picture on upper right corner). There are two pockets inside, one for cellphone and the other for keys and other little things.
The brooch is removable and store bought.

Ginger and Lime

My friend went to Estonia couple of weeks ago and she brought me a pleasant gift: Ginger & Lime body scrub (I'm a huge fan of cosmetics that have a delicious scent) and mr. Whiskers, my new washing glove. Isn't he cute?

Illustration Friday - Night

I've been a lazy blogger lately. When I got back from Dublin, I didn't feel like blogging at all. All my thoughts were concentrated on the trip and on some level on school. As you might have guessed, the trip was amazing. Photos can be seen here.
Here's also my contribution to this weeks I-Fri. Topic was night and I made a digital illustration about a little squirrel getting ready to go to bed. See her candle holder? I just bought a similar one with a rustic look. I love all vintage stuff...

It's like the couples fly (or float) around the dance floor in full understanding of each other. I dreamt of becoming a professional dancer when I was younger but gave up that dream when new ones emerged.

Illustration Friday - Escape

This week I was determined to do something creative. I-Fri topic seemed good and I got a fairly good idea for it. My illustration reflects my current life situation quite well. Or at least how I would want it to be. Sometimes it's just time to escape the reality and grab a good book, take a cup of tea (mint or black berry, preferably) and couple of pieces of chocolate. These kind of moments let you forget your boring, irritating routines and enjoy life. One of my recipies for relaxing.

Inspiration, where are you?

I've been having serious blogging problems but not technical ones, just lack of inspiration. I've been meaning to start taking part to Illustration Friday again for ages now but every week I realize that I haven't done anything, I even check the topic but I come up with nothing. It's like my inspiration is taking a vacation of its own and I tell you, it's been there too long now!

Just a moment ago I spent a perfectly relaxing moment on our back yard. The autumn sun was shining from a clear sky and I was curled up in a blanket to keep warm while reading a book. I think that at that moment my inspiration decided that it was time to return from its little runaway. I think I'm back too.

Travel Journal

School has started again and I'm back to my ordinary "time table". It's my senior year in high school and I'm (quite suprisingly) not feeling any stress at all. Of course, I should be making big decisions on what next but I like to say to myself that I'm checking out my options. At the moment I find real estate business and elementary school teaching fascinating. Odd pairing, you think? Well, I wish there was a way to combine these two...

Illustration Friday - Tranquility

This week my illustration is from a very personal perspective. In just 6 days (next Friday), I'm going to Italy for a week. We're going to Northern Italy to a little village called Pesaro (look at the location on the map). I've been waiting for this trip for almost a year now. Now it's becoming a reality and I'm so excited and yet very tranquille at the same time.

So, I'll meet you in two weeks, since I won't be able to participate I-Fri next week.

Illustration Friday - Metropolitan

I guess my illustration this week needs some explaining. The theme was metropolitan, which (quite naturally) made me think of big cities. I have to admit that Helsinki isn't really that metropolitan but it's a part of my everyday life and I do want my illustrations to have something to do with me, so...
The best way to spend a summer day in Helsinki is to get some fresh strawberries and sweet peas and have a picnic in Esplanade or Kaivopuisto park.

Illustration Friday - Heroes

When I was thinking about this week's I-Fri topic, 'heroes', one idea kept popping into my head; real life heroes. And who would be a more real life hero in my everyday life than our beloved dog, Timi. He's 11 years old, a little deaf with shaky legs and he's still kickin'! He won't let little limitations get into his way but lives life till the fullest.
This time my illustration is old. Or at least the original sketch is. Timi was not very co-operative this time when I tried to sketch him. So I worked the old sketch a little and added some digital color. I have to say that it isn't my traditional style but I kinda like it. How about you?

A Month of Softies - June Bug

My first time participating a month of softies! I've been admiring other's crafty pieces many months in a row and now I finally took the time to create something as well. Theme this month was 'June Bug'. I knew I wanted to do something butterfly related. So this little butterfly magnet was born. It has a felt body and felt wings with little painted details. I photographed it in its "natural" environment (though magnets often locate on the fridge door).

Here's my interpretation for Illustration Friday. The topic this week was 'black and white'. I got my idea when I was watching a nature program about giant pandas.
I wanted to twist my illo a little whimsical so here you have a friendly but a little bit shy panda who would very much like to give those colorful flowers to that someone special.

Illustration Friday - Summer

This weeks I-Fri theme was perfect since it's been very sunny and almost hot here in Finland. I've sunbathed in our backyard which is a rare sight considering me. But, to my illustration. My idea was simple; three things that on my opinion belongs to summer. Ice cream, for obvious reasons, T-shirts with funky prints and flip-flops, because it's nice to show off painted toenails.

See, a fresh blog! I got bored with the old blogger template and desided that it was time for a new design. But I have to admit, I didn't design this all by myself. See, I kind of suck at CSS, so I got a little help. This website provides blogger templates ready-to-use. I picked my favorite and altered it to look more "like me".
By the way, have you ever tasted pineapple sorbet? 'Cause it's friggin' good!
